The existence of a guardrail end terminal aims to eliminate the hidden dangers caused by the guardrail plate. However, without reasonable design and treatment, the guardrail end terminal could be a hidden danger itself.
There are cases that an errant car hit the guardrail end terminal and crashes it down, then the guardrail plate inserts into the car. As the guardrail plate is a steel plate of around 4m long and 1.5m high and with a thickness only 3mm or 4mm, it is as shape as a knife when striking the vehicle, this accident always results in a fatal injury to the driver.
So the purpose of the guardrail end terminal design is to avoid the guardrail plate hitting the vehicle while absorbing the impact energy and decelerating vehicle.
Guardrail end terminal designs
Currently, there are two types of guardrail end terminal on the market: the flared type and the turn-down type.
The flared type guardrail end terminal
The approach terminal is an end section of a fully returned buffered steel structure. This type is also called the anchorage end terminal.
This flare type is always used as the end of the road.
The turn-down type
This type of guardrail end terminal has the one end of the last beam insert into the ground with a slope. The buried section is reinforced by a concrete basement.
The turn-down type is always used as the start of the road.
In terms of cost, the turn-down type is higher than the flared type.
